The Museum of Contemporary Cuts announces, DemosPopuli, a new artwork series by Will Pappenheimer. Curated by Lanfranco Aceti for the Museum of Contemporary Cuts this virtual installation series consists of writings in augmented reality that are placed in the sky above the Massachusetts State House, the Old South Meeting House and other historical locations of the Freedom Trail throughout Boston.
This is a site specific virtual installation realized by artists Will Pappenheimer, who is an internationally shown artist and has exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and Zachary Brady.
The installations are a commission of the Museum of Contemporary Cuts in collaboration with the National Park Service of Boston and ArtWeek Boston. This public site specific augmented reality installations create a trail of contemporary aesthetic re-interpretations of historical events which have shaped and continue to characterize the very nature of American democracy and society.
The writings on the sky act as a series of commentaries on the contemporary erosion of democracy, increased lack of popular participation, dismantling of social structures and further distancing between politics and the demos. These augmented reality installations, positioned between game and rediscovery of democratic history and principles, invite reflections upon the status of contemporary democracy and feelings of social alienation.
Visit the following historic locations with your mobile phones or iPad, download the augmented reality app “Layar,” find the sign with the special QR code to scan, and look up at the sky!
